Overture In Light of Prolonged Disuse
Apologies. Since my last post I have busied myself with graduating from college, moving to a different state, and preparing for an impending marriage. For any that might check this regularly, they might expect erratic but hopefully increasingly frequent posts since the scholastic gods have, for the time being, grown tired of me.
For any that might be starving for a morsel of intellectual fodder, I highly suggest the book I am currently reading, From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life, 1500 to the Present, by Jacques Barzun. This imposing tome delights the patient reader with tidbits of cultural history, highlight major themes in the history of western civilization (why are we all individualists anyway?) and little interesting facts (the word “golf” is derived from the dutch “kolf”, the term used to describe the club originally used for a hockey-like game on ice in the winter. When the ice melted [no Zambonis in the 16th century] the game took to grassy lawns pg. 188). This book has spawned some reflection which will make its appearance here before long… alas you must wait.
